OC Placement Test

About OC

Students seeking entry to an opportunity class in 2025 should sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test held in designated test centers on August 1, 2024.

Significance

In New South Wales (NSW), the preparation for Opportunity Class (OC) exams is a significant and rigorous process undertaken by students seeking entry into these specialized classes.

The OC placement test has been designed to allow students to demonstrate their abilities across a range of areas, including reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. The tests are designed to measure ability rather than academic performance.

Test Information

Reading 30 minutes 25 questions Mathematical Reasoning 40 minutes, 35 questions Thinking Skills 30 minutes 30 questions

Preparation

Since the test is conducted when the child is in Year 4, the preparation must start from the year they are in Grade 3.

Research demonstrates that, in addition to providing academic benefits, grouping high potential and gifted students together is also good for students’ emotional wellbeing. Test Information

There are four tests:

  • Reading (30 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes)
  • Mathematical Reasoning ( 35 multiple -choice questions in 40 minutes)
  • Thinking Skills ( 40 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes)
  • Writing ( 1 open response question in 30 minutes)

Preparation

Since the test is conducted when the child begins Year 6, the preparation must start from the year they are in Grade 4 to provide a two-year worth of extensive practice.

During NAPLAN, the following areas are assessed:

  • Writing (40 minutes)
  • Reading (50 minutes)
  • Conventions of language – spelling, grammar and punctuation (40 minutes)
  • Mumeracy ( 50 minutes)
