CLT – Cognitive Load Theory

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) explores how the brain processes information and manages the cognitive demands of learning. It suggests that instructional design should consider the limitations of working memory to optimise learning. Minimising extraneous cognitive load (unnecessary information) and maximising intrinsic load (essential learning content) can enhance understanding and retention.

 

R3 – Repetition Rehearsal Retention

Repetition rehearsal involves repeating information to enhance memorisation, while retention is the ability to recall that information later. In learning, consistent review and practice contribute to repetition rehearsal, strengthening neural connections for better retention over time. Active engagement, like self-quizzing or teaching the material, can further enhance both processes.
